• Five Habits to Overhaul Your Oral Health

    The only way to develop good oral health habits is to practice them, and let them become second nature. It’s hard at first, but the improvement will be worth it! Here are some habits that are worth cultivating.

    1. Avoid eating really hard or acidic foods

    Did you know that crunching ice can cause teeth to fracture or chip by creating microscopic cracks in the surface of the enamel? Popcorn kernels and fruit pits can cause the same problem. Acidic foods can corrode the enamel, so don’t suck any lemons.

    2. Avoid grinding your teeth

    Grinding your teeth wears them down. It doesn’t matter what time of day you do it, although many people do it while they’re asleep. Stress and anxiety can be issues, but an abnormal bite or missing and crooked teeth can also cause grinding. Your dentist can fit you with a mouth guard, or you can buy one yourself over the counter.

    3. Watch other bad habits that traumatize your teeth

    Biting your cheek can lead to oral trauma. Sucking your thumb and biting nails can cause problems with tooth alignment. Using your teeth as a tool to tear open bags or uncap jars, straighten forks, or rip off price tags may simply traumatize your teeth. If you have a bad habit that involves your mouth, try to break it, because it can cause issues down the line.

    4. Eat a balanced diet and quit smoking

    Smoking can cause many health problems, including reduced smell and taste senses, bad breath, receding gums, and yellow-tinted teeth. Tobacco can cause the loss of teeth, too. Meanwhile, carbonated drinks can be very acidic, and erode enamel. Eating high-calcium foods and vegetables and fruits, on the other hand, provides your body with the nutrients you need for strong teeth.

    5. Optimize your oral care routine

    You’ve been brushing your teeth so long, why would you need to worry about how you do it? Well, you may be getting complacent about your method, and it’s time to think about making changes. Do you floss once a day? Do you brush at least twice a day? Do you brush long enough, in the back of your mouth as well as the front? Do you replace your toothbrush every few months? Are you using mouthwash, and scraping your tongue?
