• Why Dental X-rays Are A Crucial Part of A Comprehensive Dental Exam

Dental X-RayHeading to the dentist twice a year for your dental exam is crucial for your overall dental health. You may get a simple check-up or cleaning during that time. However, one of the most important components to your dental exam are x-rays.

Though this may seem like an additional expense that you don’t need to deal with, x-rays can help your dentist identify problems before they become painful issues. If you’re in doubt about x-rays and why you need them, read on.

X-rays are an important preventive measure.

You’ve looked in the mirror and all you can see is a lovely white smile. That must mean everything is great, right? Wrong. Many dental problems occur where you can’t see them. Even your dentist may not be able to identify decay happening in certain areas, or the potential for a broken or cracked tooth. An x-ray can help your dentist find these problems and fix them before they become huge issues.

X-rays are included with most dental plans.

Though you might be concerned that a series of x-rays may leave you broke, it’s simply not the case. Many dental plans cover x-rays that are ordered by the dentist so you shouldn’t be out of pocket for most of them. If you’re at all concerned, speak to your dentist before the x-rays are taken. They should be able to advise you as to what is an additional cost.

Getting x-rays can show how stable your current dental work is.

Like many adults, you have probably already had fillings or dental work. While it may seem that once you’ve had it you don’t need to worry about it any longer, these dental fixtures need to be checked and maintained to ensure your overall oral health. Fillings can sometimes partially fall out or chip, and crowns are only supposed to last for approximately 15 years. An x-ray can show any significant movement or problems, keeping you pain free and ahead of the game.

When your dentist suggests a series of x-rays, it’s important that you allow them to take them. They can show significant problems that may be occurring or may happen in the future. By taking care of these issues now as part of a comprehensive dental exam, you can ensure that you have a pain-free and healthy mouth.

I though it was interesting that you mentioned how x-rays are actually included in most dental plans. My sister is looking to have her comprehensive dental exams done but is worried about paying extra for things like x-rays, etc. I think I will encourage her to get it taken care of and that the x-ray is most likely included.

Dental X-rays are a useful diagnostic tool when helping dentist detect damage and disease not visible during a regular dental exam.
