Sometimes, even with proper brushing, the odds are still stacked against you to get a cavity because the deep grooves in your teeth can be very hard to clean. Even if you’re brushing regularly, food particles can still get into those nooks and crannies and eventually cause tooth decay. This is especially true for children’s molars and premolars, which is why dental sealants are most commonly seen in children, but can also be used on adults, too.
What are Dental Sealants?
So what is a dental sealant? Well, it’s a thin, plastic resin that is placed over the tooth’s chewing surface that hardens and protects that area from damaging plaque build-up. Essentially, the sealant smooths out the surface of the tooth making it easier to clean (less nooks and crannies) and forming a protective barrier to keep the tooth from developing a cavity. They essentially “seal out” the damaging materials to keep your tooth safe which is why they are called sealants!
Who Needs Sealants?
Dental sealants are most common in children because they are much more prone to cavities, especially between the ages of 6 and 14. Sealants can last up to 10 years so it is a great idea to have them put on as soon as your child’s permanent teeth come in.
Everyone is susceptible to tooth decay, though, no matter your age. So, there are some benefits to getting sealants as an adult as well. If you have molars without existing decay or fillings, sealants can be a great way to further protect that tooth for years to come potentially saving you money on more extensive dental work and the headache of having teeth filled or even pulled.
